It considers the first two cards that are dealt to player and the dealer’s up facing card to begin with. With basic strategy, you will take a hit when you have a total hand value of 16 or less and the dealer’s up card is a 7 or higher. Basic strategy also says that players should stand if they have a 17 or higher. The only exception to this rule is when the player has a “soft” 17 on their first two cards which is an ace and a 6. Players can also take a hit on soft 17 hands when they have more than two cards (example: the player’s hand has two 3’s and one ace. This is still considered a soft 17 hand which means it is either 7 or 17 since the ace card can count as a 1 or an 11.
Basic blackjack strategy also says the best move when a player has an 11 on their first two cars is to “double down”. Doubling down is when they player doubles their initial bet amount and receive one more card only. The idea here is that there are more 10 value cards in the deck than any other single card so when doubling down the player is hoping to receive a 10 value card getting them a 21 on their hand.
